Magento Support: Inventory Introduction and Setup

Inventory Introduction and Setup in Magento - Product Stock Options

Inventory introduction and setup in Magento can be confusing. Managing stock creates opportunities for customer engagement by displaying stock availability messages in your store, and giving your customers the opportunity to receive product alerts. Even if your store doesn’t have a large inventory of products, your customers can benefit from the way you manage your inventory. Therefore, we will discuss inventory introduction and setup in Magento.

Inventory Introduction and Setup in Magento

Your customers can greatly benefit from the way you manage your inventory in Magento. Therefore, we will have provided a few tips on inventory introduction and setup in Magento.

Introduction to Inventory

You can make inventory settings for the catalog as a whole and fine tune them for each individual product. In addition to controlling stock levels, the inventory settings determine management of backorders and returned items. If your needs are simple, you might choose not to manage inventory at all. However, inventory management is more than just keeping track of how many products you have on hand.

Inventory Setup

The Product Stock Items configuration determines the default product inventory settings. The configuration applies to individual products, rather than to the contents of the cart as a whole.

To configure the default inventory settings:

  1. On the Admin menu, select System > Configuration.
  2. In the panel on the left, under Catalog, select Inventory.
  3. Click the expand the Product Stock Options section.
  4. Enter the default settings for each item, as described in the following field descriptions.
  5. When complete, click the Save Config button.
